내일의 전통, 오늘의 관객을 만나다
월간국립극장
사전 신청을 통해 참여한 다국적 사물놀이 초보자 15명은 악기의 유래와 역사 그리고 악기 연주를 통해
한국 문화를 깊이 체득하는 시간을 가졌다.
현지인 관계자의 문장을 통해 그가 어떤 시선으로 이 프로그램을 기획하고 참여했는지 살펴보자.
한국 문화를 처음 접한 것은 2007년 <대장금>이라는 한국 드라마를 처음 봤을 때였다. 처음에는 한국 드라마인 줄도 모르고 시청했지만 드라마 세트의 아름다운 미학, 화려한 한복, 그리고 또 아랍 고유의 음식과 비교하는 재미가 있었던 다채로운 한식의 면모에 자연스레 관심이 깊어졌다. 우리 가족은 결국 드라마 <대장금>에 중독됐고, 그 드라마를 통해 한국 요리뿐만 아니라 한국 가요, 그리고 다양한 한국 문화를 조금씩 알아가기 시작했다.
한국 문화에 관한 관심의 불씨는 결국 나를 내 고국 아랍에미리트에 있는 한국문화원까지 이끌게 됐다. 이곳에서 한국 문화를 지키고 홍보하는 일을 도우면서 나는 풍요로운 한국 문화가 어떻게 세계 먼 곳까지 뻗어나갈 수 있는지를 체감했다. 10년 전 사람들은 유튜브와 소셜 미디어 같은 온라인 플랫폼에서만 한정적으로 한국 문화와 관련된 콘텐츠를 접할 수 있었지만, 문화원이 생기고 난 이후에는 직접 참여할 수 있는 형태로 확장되면서, 전통문화를 관찰하고 체험에 참여하는 등 다양한 측면으로 수요가 늘어났다. 그중에서도 가장 흥미로운 것은 사물놀이였다. 이 행사는 내가 직접 참여한 행사 중 하나인데, 예상보다 많은 외국인 참석자가 악기를 배워보고 싶어 했다. 한국의 전통성이 강하게 드러나는 형태의 예술일수록 사람들은 더 흥미롭게 빠져드는 듯했다.

사물놀이 행사에 참여한 많은 사람은 한국 전통 타악기 음악에 매료됐다. 사물놀이는 말 그대로 네 가지 사물이 연주하는 것을 의미한다. 행사는 장구·북·징·꽹과리 네 명의 연주자가 완벽하게 조화를 이루며 리듬과 멜로디를 연주해 매혹적이고 활기찬 음악을 만들어냈다. 특히 연주자가 움직이며 서로 상호작용을 하는 모습이 악기와 대화하는 것 같아서 인상적이었다.
주아랍에미리트 한국문화원의 직원으로서 많은 행사와 워크숍에 참여할 기회가 있었고, 이를 통해 한국 문화가 가지고 있는 고유성에 대한 이해도가 점차 깊어졌다. 사물놀이 행사를 준비하는 과정에서 가장 인상 깊었던 부분은 그 과정 자체가 만들어낸 공동체 의식이었다. 대부분의 참가자는 한국인이 아니었지만, 그들은 하나의 연결고리로 이어졌고 전통예술을 배우는 공통의 목표와 함께 하나의 물결로 어우러졌다. 곡을 연주하고 감상하며, 서로 다른 언어와 문화를 초월한 유대감이 형성됐다. 행사가 끝난 후에도 참가자들은 서로 느꼈던 기쁨과 만족감을 공유하며 그것을 가능케 했던 사물놀이의 힘을 다시 한번 느끼는 듯했다. 이 경험은 그들뿐만 아니라 내게도 잊을 수 없는 순간을 안겨주었다. 여러 색채의 소리가 한데 어울리고 섞이며, 소박하면서도 다채롭고 호화스러운 한국 문화의 깊이에 압도됐다. 사물놀이는 단순히 공연이 아니라 한국의 정체성과 공동체의 문화적 표현임을 분명히 느낄 수 있었다.

사물놀이는 단순한 음악 연주에 그치지 않고, 한국의 문화와 고유한 정신을 담고 있는 예술 장르 중 하나다. 이는 한국 전통음악의 대표적인 예술 중 하나로서, 한국인들이 가지고 있는 정서와 가치관을 음악으로 나타내는 것이고 사물놀이를 연주하는 것은 곧 한국 문화를 이해하고 전달하는 것과 같다. 또한 사물놀이는 단순히 음악을 즐기는 것 이상으로 한국 문화와 정서, 인간관계에 대한 깊은 이해를 통해 삶을 풍요롭게 하는 데에 의의가 있다.
주아랍에미리트 한국문화원의 한국 문화 홍보는 여기서 그치지 않는다. 마치 전통 사물놀이의 뿌리를 공유한 듯한 열정적이고 힘이 넘치는 케이팝은 더욱더 확장된 규모의 콘서트 개최를 가능하도록 이끌었다. 전 세계의 많은 팬은 한국 가요에 대한 뜨거운 열정을 숨기지 않았고, 그 함성은 앞으로의 무한한 잠재력을 보여주는 듯했다. 한국 음악에서 사물놀이와 케이팝은 서로 다른 장르이지만, 두 장르 모두 한국 문화와 전통에 대한 자부심을 갖고 있으며, 한국의 독특한 아이덴티티와 가치를 대중에게 널리 알리고 있다. 케이팝은 전통적인 한국 음악을 존중하면서도 새로운 시도와 혁신적인 아이디어를 추구하는 것으로 유명하다. 최근 많은 케이팝 가수가 자신의 음악에 전통악기를 사용하거나 전통적인 퍼포먼스를 도입하면서 이를 자연스럽게 융합하는 경향도 함께 볼 수 있다.
한국의 전통문화는 오늘날의 예술·문화 그리고 엔터테인먼트 산업에 큰 영향을 미치고 있으며 새로운 창작물을 만들어내는 데 큰 영감을 주고 있다. 나는 한국 전통문화의 강력한 힘을 직접 관찰한 증인으로서, 사물놀이와 같은 전통문화의 자부심이 꾸준히 공유돼야 한다고 생각한다. 이는 과거, 현재 그리고 미래를 잇는 소중한 유산이자, 나의 삶을 송두리째 바꾼 정체성 자체이기 때문이다.

My first exposure to Korean culture came in 2007 when I saw the Korean drama "Daejanggeum." I initially watched it without realizing it was a Korean drama, but I soon started to notice the stunning aesthetics of the set, the vibrant hanbok, and the bright Korean cuisine, which was interesting to contrast with my own meals. My family and I eventually became addicted to the drama "Daejanggeum," and by enjoying the drama that we gradually began to understand not just Korean food but also other aspects of Korean culture including Korean pop music.
My first interest in Korean culture eventually brought me to the Korean Cultural Center in the United Arab Emirates, where I was born and raised. I started to see how rich Korean culture can be all over the world as I assisted in preserving and promoting it here. Ten years ago, the only places where people could find information about Korean culture were online (via sites like YouTube and social media), but following the opening of the cultural center, there was a greater demand for traditional culture, such as experiencing it firsthand and engaging in it. In the meantime, Samullori caught my attention. This was one of the events in which I took part, and more international participants than anticipated expressed a desire to study musical instruments. People's curiosity seemed to increase since the art powerfully reflected Korean tradition.

The traditional Korean percussion music wowed a large number of attendees at the samullori event. Samullori, which is literally translated as "four object play," consists of four instruments including Janggu, Drum, Jing, and Kkwaenggwari that are played by four artists who perform rhythm and melody in perfect unison to provide captivating and dynamic music. In particular the artists' movement and interaction with one another while appearing to speak with an instrument was outstanding during the lecture.
My grasp of the distinctiveness of Korean culture steadily grew as a result of the numerous events and workshops I was able to take part in while working at the Korean Cultural Center. The spirit of community that was fostered by the preparation for the Samullori event was its most outstanding aspect. The majority of participants were not Korean, yet they all connected through one point and merged into a wave with the aim of studying traditional art. A connection spanning many languages and cultures was made through playing and appreciation of music. After the event, the participants continued to express their happiness and contentment with one another and felt the strength of samullori that made it possible. This encounter left a lasting impression on me as well as on them. I was taken aback by the profundity of Korean culture, which was straightforward and clear. I could tell that Samullori is more than simply a show; it is a cultural manifestation of Korea's identity and community.

Samullori is more than just a musical performance; it also embodies Korean spirit and culture. Playing the samullori is akin to comprehending and expressing Korean culture. It is one of the representative arts of Korean traditional music, which uses music to portray the feelings and values of Koreans. Samullori also contributes to the enrichment of life by giving listeners a comprehensive grasp of Korean culture, emotions, and interpersonal relationships.
The Korean Cultural Center is continuing to promote Korean culture in many ways. The potential of staging concerts on a larger scale was made possible by the passionate and energizing K-pop, which appeared to have origins in traditional samullori. The passion of many K-pop fans throughout the world was evident in their yells, which appeared to hint to the genre's limitless future potential. Although samullori and K-pop are two different types of Korean music, they both take pride in Korean heritage and culture, and work to spread awareness of Korea's distinctive culture and values. K-pop is renowned for developing fresh ideas and ground-breaking concepts while honoring traditional Korean music. There has been a recent increase in traditional instruments and performances being used in K-pop music, as well as a trend to organically combine the two.
Korean traditional culture has had a significant impact on today's art, culture, and entertainment sectors, and it serves as a source of inspiration for new works. Being a witness to the powerful strength of Korean traditional culture, I believe the pride of traditional culture, such as samullori, should be transmitted consistently. This is due to the fact that it is a valuable heritage that connects the past, present, and future, as well as the identity itself, which has also impacted my life.
